Mrs. Newman, 90, died December 31, 2017, at home. She was born February 18, 1927, in Brookhaven to Floyd and Lillie Allen.
She graduated from New Sight School in 1945 where she played sports and met the love of her life and future husband, Henry Lee Newman, Jr.
They married on Thanksgiving night, November 22, 1945. She was a loving wife and helpmate to her husband and a wonderful stay-at-home mother to their two daughters.
She sewed clothes for her girls, their dolls, and herself. She enjoyed growing a garden each year, putting up vegetables, pickles and jellies for her family, and was a wonderful cook.
She was a Christian and a lifelong member of New Sight Baptist Church where she faithfully attended until her health declined. She lovingly cared for many pets over the years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Henry Lee Newman, Jr., brothers Eugene and Earl Allen, and several much loved in-laws.
She is survived by her daughters, Shirley Newman Knapp and Kathy Newman Edge and husband Steve, all of Brookhaven; granddaughter Angela Pittman of Brandon;
grandson Brian Goode and family of Terry; sister-in-law Ruth Newman of Pearl; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved calico cats, Callie and Kate.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to her favorite charities:
Brookhaven Animal Rescue League,
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, or Gideons International.
The family thanks especially her loving and dependable caregivers for the last three years,
Pat Sills, Kathy Etheridge, and special niece Sybil Smith, as well as the staff of Hospice Compassus.
