John Melvin Case

A Graveside Service for Mr. John Melvin Case of Brookhaven are 10:30 am, Friday, November 11, 2022, at New Salem Church of Christ Cemetery, with visitation from 9:00-10:00 am at Riverwood.

Mr. John Melvin Case, 76, passed away November 7, 2022, at Haven Hall Nursing Home in Brookhaven. He was born September 26, 1946, to the late Willie Cleveland Case and Winnie Smith Case.

Preceding him in death were his parents; first wife, Renee Case and Second wife, Betty Joyce Case; his brother Dalton Case and sister, Betty Joyce Smith.

Those left to cherish his memory are his son, Ray Joe Case and wife, Brandi; daughters, Kasey Bouquet and husband, Adam, and Michele Case; and sister, Ruth Hodges. He is also survived by six grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all that loved him.

Lena Ruth McFall Guthrie

Funeral service for Lena Ruth McFall Guthrie will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, November 9, at Riverwood Family, with interment in the Stewart Cemetery in Brookhaven. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, November 8, at Riverwood and will resume Wednesday from Noon until the time of service.

Ms. Guthrie, 63, of Ferriday, passed away November 6, 2022. She was born September 2, 1959, to Marvin Jacob McFall and Alice Geraldine Buitt McFall. She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Ms. Guthrie had many different hobbies including sewing, crocheting, and all kinds of crafts. She also exhibited a love of music and displayed that talent through playing guitar as well as piano. She was a wonderful grandmother; her grandkids were the most precious part of her life. She also had much love for her great nephews. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

 She is preceded in death by her parents.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Gary Guthrie, Jr. (Christina “Woogie” Guthrie; brother, Jack McFall (Rachael); sister, Letha Taylor (Wayne Smith); three grandchildren, Zachary Guthrie, Zoey Guthrie, Zayden Guthrie; nieces, Destiny Butts (Randall), Jessica Davis (John), Amanda Faulkner (Ashley)  and Haley Gustafson (Cory); great nephews, Kaiser Edens, Riley Butts, Carson Butts, Dean Edwards; and sister/cousin, Lisa Gentry (Jerry). She is also survived by other loving family members and friends.

Sarah Nell Underwood (Gill)

Sarah Nell Underwood (Gill) passed away on November 7, 2022, as a result of lung cancer. She died peacefully, with her loving family at her side. She was born on February 17, 1960, in Memphis TN, and grew up in Frenchman’s Bayou AR. Sarah was raised in a hard-working delta family. As a child, she chopped cotton, worked the garden, and tended the farm animals. She graduated from Rivercrest High School in 1978. She then attended her beloved University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS, and graduated with a degree in business administration in 1982 She was a member of the Ole Miss Choir and one of the original members of the Ole Miss Concert Singers. She married Don Underwood in 1984 and they moved to his hometown of Brookhaven MS. Sarah quickly became involved in the community. She was best known for her beautiful soprano voice. She led the soprano section of the First United Methodist Church for almost 40 years and shared her beautiful voice at innumerable weddings, funerals, and other social functions. Sarah shined when she sang. She was an active member of the Brookhaven Little Theatre, both starring in and directing many shows, as well as serving on their board of directors. Sarah was also the recipient of the prestigious BLT John Landress Award. Sarah worked for the Mississippi Division of Medicaid for more than 30 years. Through the years, she humbly helped the most vulnerable in our community. She retired from her regional manager position in June of 2022. Sarah loved all her family and friends, and she loved her community, but none owned her heart, like her only child, her dear son Stone Underwood. Never has there been a more faithful mother. She was often seen sporting a Stone tote bag at football games, wearing a Stone football jersey, and she put up a Stone Christmas tree yearly, decorated with all his childhood ornaments. May all mothers endeavor to love like Sarah loved Stone. Sarah is survived by her husband, Don Underwood, son, Stone Underwood, daughter-in-law, Devon Kelly Underwood, sister, Polly Gill, sister, Trudy Gill, brother, Gus Daniel (Danny) Gill, and sister-in-law, Tammy Underwood Torrey. She is proceeded in death by her parents, Charlene Laverne Cothern Gill and Gus Daniel Gill, grandparents, George Gus GIll and Florence Stone Gill, and her brother-in-law, Jimmy Torrey.

Visitation is Wednesday, November 9th, from 5:00-8:00 pm at Riverwood Family Funeral Service, Brookhaven, MS, and Thursday, November 10th, 9:30-10:30 am, at First United Methodist Church, Brookhaven, MS, followed by the funeral service at 10:30 am. Burial will follow at Riverwood Memorial Park.

 In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Sarah G. Underwood Athletic Fund at Copiah-Lincoln Community College or to Brookhaven Animal Rescue League (BARL)

Mrs. Keith Covington Newland McDaniel

A Memorial gathering for Mrs. Keith Covington Newland McDaniel will be 11 a.m. Monday, November 7, at Faith Presbyterian Church in Brookhaven.

Keith Covington Newland McDaniel went to her heavenly reward on November 3, 2022, at the age of 97 years.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her children, Kent McDaniel (JoAnn), Carol Taylor (Bill), and Kirk McDaniel (Mary Jane), as well as six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She was born June 22, 1925, to Doctor Leroy T. Newland and Sarah Louise Andrews Newland, and raised mostly on the mission field in Korea prior to coming to college at Belhaven University in Jackson. She had three older brothers, and three older sisters, all of whom predeceased her. Keith lost her precious husband, James “Jim” McDaniel, in December 1986, and she lived a very full life of service to others, both before and after his passing.

Keith was a Master’s level teacher, mostly of languages, at both the high school and community college prior to her retirement at Copiah Lincoln Community College in 1984. Following her retirement, Keith got even more heavily involved in work for Christ’s Kingdom. From her home in Brookhaven, MS, she served in multiple missions, many out of the country, to places like Mexico City (she taught Spanish and was fluent in it), Juarez, Belize, Peru, Ukraine, and Korea. Closer to home she was involved in Missions Mississippi, Prison Fellowship, King’s Daughters Hospital Auxiliary, nursing home visitation, and Brother Durr’s food pantry and outreach, to name a few. She remained a “teacher” in many settings including Sunday School at Faith Presbyterian in Brookhaven and traveling to speak at Christian Women’s Clubs around the southeastern United States. She loved to bake homemade bread and share it with many friends and strangers, (although no one stayed in this category for long once they met Keith).

The family wishes to thank her special caregivers, Sherice Walker, Gladys Cooper, Earnestine Hudson, Edwina (EJ) Bronson and Mitzi Proctor.

Malcolm Kevin McManus

A Memorial Service for Malcolm Kevin McManus of Gulfport are 12:00 pm on Saturday, November 12, 2022, at Solid Rock Pentecostal Church in Brookhaven, MS.

Visitation will be from 11:00 until the time of the service.

 

Mr. Malcolm Kevin McManus, 63, passed away November 2, 2022at St Dominic’s Hospital in Jackson.

He was born January 6, 1959, to the late Woodrow McManus and Ruby Sullivan McManus.

Mr. McManus served his country in the United States Marine Corps.

He worked as a Lineman for the Coast Electric Power Association.

His hobbies were hunting, fishing and enjoying long hiking trips and he was quite a “Turkey Slayer”. He loved to rest and relax on “God’s front porch” and spend time with family.

 

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 27 years, Maureen McManus; his daughter, Heather McManus Adams and husband, Chuck; and his two grandchildren, Kevin Adams and Ruby Adams.

Mrs. James Alma Fernstrom Russell

A graveside service for Mrs. James Alma Fernstrom Russell of Brookhaven will be 2:00 pm, Thursday, November 3, 2022, at Easthaven Cemetery.

Mrs. James Alma Fernstrom Russell, 93, passed away October 30, 2022. She was born on October 17, 1929, to the late Roland Albert Fernstrom and Letha Lillian Swindell Fernstrom.

She was a homemaker and the wife of a farmer.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, James Edwin Russell; daughter, Judy Patt; brothers, James Fernstrom, Richard Fernstrom, R.A. Fernstrom, John Fernstrom, Joseph Fernstrom and Daniel Fernstrom and sisters, Mary Walters and Martha Fernstrom.

Those left to cherish her memory are her grandson, James Keith Patt and wife, Melissa; granddaughter, Jennifer Ann Dickerson and husband, Chris; great grandchildren, Austin Patt and wife, Kara, Mary Ellen Patt, and Hannah Dickerson and husband, Bryce; two great great grandchildren, Fisher Davis and Raylan Patt. She also leaves behind a daughter and four other grandchildren and nine other great grandchildren.

She will be missed by all that loved her.

Mary Virginia Boughton Patrick

Graveside service for Mary Virginia Patrick will be 11:30 a.m., Friday, November 4, at Fair River Baptist Church Cemetery in Brookhaven, MS. Visitation is from 10-11 a.m., Friday, at Riverwood Family prior to graveside service.

Mary Virginia (Boughton) Patrick departed this life on October 31, 2022. She was born on Christmas Eve, 1939 to Hubert Allen Boughton and Ersel Thornton Boughton in Winnsboro, Louisiana. She was the only daughter of her family, which included three brothers. Her older brother (Bayard Boughton) died shortly after his birth in January 1939; she had two younger brothers - Fred and James.

She spent most of her childhood in the Alsatia, Louisiana. On December 22, 1957, she married the "love of her life", Doug Patrick. She and Doug have three children - Stan, Donna, and Eric. During her life, Mary was a bookkeeper for several companies, but worked most of her career at Kees Motor Company in Brookhaven (MS). She was a member of Fair River Baptist Church and served on several committees and provided other service to the church. She was an avid follower of LSU athletics and was a great cook, seamstress, and enjoyed creating various crafts and novelties.

She is preceded in death by her husband (Doug Patrick), her parents (Hubert Allen Boughton and Ersel Thornton Boughton), and her brothers (Bayard, Fred, and James Boughton).

 Surviving family members are her children - son Stan Patrick, and wife Susie of Hattiesburg (MS); daughter Donna Patrick Criswell, and husband Randy of Brookhaven (MS); and son Eric Patrick of Fort Myers (FL). She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Toby Criswell, Megan Criswell Crotwell, Josh Patrick, Jake Patrick, Joel Patrick, Jonathon Patrick, and Joseph Patrick and six great-grandchildren, Conner Crotwell, Lillee Criswell, Zeb Crotwell, Jon Ross Criswell, Pierson Patrick, and Noah Patrick.

Edith Nellene Case

Graveside service for Edith Nellene Case will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, November 2, in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Case, 90, of Brookhaven, passed from this life October 29, 2022, at Marion General Hospital in Columbia, MS. She was born August 1, 1932, to Finas Olian and Luna Mae Wilson Case. She was a member of New Hope Church of Christ. Mrs. Case worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant in area nursing homes. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed preparing delicious meals for her family and friends. She also enjoyed her grandchildren and traveling. She was a loving and faithful wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Case and their daughter, Rosalina Yarborough.

Those who remain to cherish her memory are her children, Donald Golmon, Dwyane Golmon, Ladell Case, Bobby Case, Kay Coley, Hilda Ann Ratcliff, and Judy Smith; brother, Rodney Case; sisters, Vergie Watts and Johnnie Pearl Summerlin; 23 grandchildren and numerous great and great great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

Barbara Moak Wallace

Funeral service for Barbara Moak Wallace will be 10 a.m., Saturday, November 5, 2022, at Riverwood Family, with burial in the Montgomery Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is 4-7 p.m., Friday, November 4, at Riverwood.

Mrs. Wallace, 86, of Brookhaven, passed from this life October 28, 2022, in Austin, TX. She was born in Summit, MS, January 17, 1936, to Kennie Lee Moak and Clara Reeves Moak. Mrs. Wallace graduated high school at Johnston Station and was successful at many career opportunities in Morgan City, Louisiana and Houston, Texas. In 1994 she and Henry owned Southern Wholesale Grass in Pearl, MS. and both retired after selling the company. She was also a caretaker and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Wallace was a member of First Baptist Church, Jackson, MS, where she enjoyed being a part of the choir, mission trips, bible study and working in the Nursery. Her hobbies included traveling and cultivating her plants. By her family, friends and colleagues, she was considered one of the most loving, gentle, caring, spiritual and compassionate people they ever met. Barbara’s honest way of approaching life is what her loved ones will miss the most.

She is preceded in death by her parents; son, Robert “Robby” Conrad Moak; and sister, Esther Rebecca Pope.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Henry H. Wallace; son, Hank Wallace and wife, Vickie, Brookhaven, MS,; sisters, Glenda Moak McKean, Greenburg, LA,  Martha Moak Martin, Madison, MS, and many sisters and brothers by choice; grandchildren, Trent Wallace (Taylor), Brookhaven, MS,  and Macie Elizabeth Stevens (Shelton), Carthage, NC, ; beloved nephew, Orian Williams; brothers and sisters and a host of nieces and nephews and her many pets.

Christopher Claude Callender

Funeral service for Christopher Claude Callender will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at Friendship Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.

Mr. Callender, 52, of Richland, MS, passed from this life October 25, 2022, in Jackson. He was born in Brookhaven June 25, 1970, to Claude Callender and Ann Brown Callender. He was employed as an electrician. His career enabled him to travel across the state for commercial electrician work. He enjoyed keeping a manicured yard and he was an avid outdoorsman. Chris took great pride in his grandchildren and cared very deeply for his family. He will be greatly missed by those who loved him.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Ann Callender; grandparents, Dewitt and Vergie Callender and Hilton and Irene Brown; uncles, Hilton Brown Jr and Houston Foster; and aunts, Sharon Brown and Lucille Everett.

Those left to cherish his memory are, his daughter, Chloe Callender; his father, Claude Callender; brothers, Blake Callender and Jody Callender; and two grandchildren, Delaneigh Martin and Cash Denton. He is also survived by other loving family members and friends.
