Paul Willie Griffin, Jr.

Paul Willie Griffin, Jr., 80, of Bogue Chitto, MS, died March 27, 2025, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center. He was born in Roxie, MS, on July 16, 1944, to Paul Willie Griffin, Sr. and Eunice Elaine Griffin. He retired from MS Army National Guard.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Hope Case, Brenda Furr, Barbara Duval, and Jackie Griffin.

He is survived by his children, Paul M. Griffin and Edward M. Griffin, Sr.; sister, Tammye Lynn O’Brian; nine grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.

Matilda Jane Allen Jackson

A celebration of life will be held for Matilda “Jane” Allen Jackson at 11:00 am, Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at Riverwood Family. The Visitation will be Monday, March 31, at Riverwood, and burial will be at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.

 Mrs. Matilda “Jane” Allen Jackson passed away on March 26, 2025, at her home in Brookhaven.

She was born on December 30, 1941, to the late James Ray Allen and Sally Mae Delaughter Allen.

 In her younger years, she enjoyed fishing and camping, and in her later years, she enjoyed spending time with her family and will be dearly missed.

 Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband, Paul Andrew Jackson; her daughter, Nan Davis; her son, Thomas Clayton Brown; her brother, Robert “Bob” Allen; and her sisters, Virginia Ann Case, Peggy Sue King, Joyce Smith, and Shirley Case.

 Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Channing Garner, and wife, Brandie; her brother, Kenneth Allen and wife, Minnie; 4 grandchildren, Macy Bowman, Heidi Thornton, Brady Garner, and Bryleigh Garner, along with her 4 great-grandchildren, Hailey Bowman, Hartley Cain, Aria Cain, and Anden Cain

and great-great grandchild, Rylan Bowman.

 The family would like to thank Amanda Mabry and Jackie White with Deaconesses Hospice for their compassionate care. Also, to Charlotte Laird, for everything you did for MawMaw.

Joseph Earl Thomas

Mr. Joseph Earl Thomas, 67, of Pearl, MS, died March 24, 2025, at Columbia Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Columbia, MS. He was born in Magnolia, MS on October 19, 1957, to Eugene Thomas and Hazel Bands Thomas.

Mr. Thomas worked as an appliance repairman and enjoyed going to work to serve others. He worked hard and provided well for his family. He was a man full of life and loving every moment of it. He changed the atmosphere of the room when he walked into it. Mr. Thomas loved music and good ole southern soul food. He was an avid fan of the New Orleans Saints and the Golden State Warriors. Mr. Thomas cherished his family and did a wonderful job of caring for them. He will always be loved and never forgotten by those who loved him.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one son; one brother, and two sisters.

He is survived by his children, Jessica Thomas, Mikhail Thomas, Jerry Cockerham, Brian Brumfield, Derrick Brumfield, Joey Brumfield, John Lowery, and Jonathan Lowery; brothers, Eugene Thomas, Bobby Holloway, and James Holloway; sisters, Mary A. Holloway Jones, Gloria Jean, Shirley Singleton, and Carrie Barns; 15 grandchildren, Ken’Jhori Anderson, Finleigh Ofili, and a host of other loving family members and friends.

Clarence "Pete" Dixon, Jr.

Clarence "Pete" Dixon Jr., 90, passed away on March 25, 2025, peacefully at home in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Born to Clarence and Janey Rushing Dixon on February 1, 1935, he spent his life dedicated to his family, faith, and service to others.

Pete proudly served in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Alaska. His time in the military instilled in him a deep sense of discipline and commitment that carried through every aspect of his life.

He was an active member of Gum Grove Baptist Church, where he served as a devoted deacon for many years. Pete also taught Sunday School lessons at Haven Hall Health Care Center every Sunday for over ten years.

A man of strong values and unwavering dedication, Pete shared 66 wonderful years with his beloved wife, LaWanda Case. Together, they built a loving family that brought them immense joy.

He was passionate about making a positive impact on the lives of young student-athletes. His career included thirty-one years in education; 13 years in Franklin County and 18 years in Lincoln County where he was a history teacher and principal. In addition, he coached basketball, baseball, track and football, and had 33 years of experience in being a referee and umpire.

An avid golfer, Pete found great enjoyment on the course and made many lifelong friends through the game of golf. He also cherished watching his grandchildren play sports. His love for family was evident in every moment he spent cheering them on from the sidelines.

Pete is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, LaWanda, and sons Bob and Ken; grandchildren Karri Smith (Tyler) of Brookhaven, Will Dixon (Miranda) of Gluckstadt, Lee Jones (Brittney) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Rhett Dixon of Jonesboro, Arkansas; and seven great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sisters Ouida McCaffrey of Bogue Chitto and Anna Case of El Paso, Texas, along with many nieces and nephews.

The family is grateful for the compassionate care provided by Taylor Roberts, Harley Martin and Cayla McCurley, and the Hospice Compassus staff.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, from 10 AM to 1 PM at Riverwood Family in Brookhaven with funeral to follow at 1 PM. A graveside service will be held at Gum Grove Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Pete’s legacy of faith, love, and dedication will live on through those who knew him. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Gum Grove Baptist Church.

Carol Ann Crumholt Hoyt

A celebration of life service will be held for Carol Ann Crumholt Hoyt 1:30 p.m., Saturday, April 5, at Crosby Baptist Church. Please wear bright colors!

Ms. Carol, 71, of Crosby, MS died March 21, 2025, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Brookhaven. She was born January 5, 1954, to Talmage Edward Crumholt, Jr. and Christine Hazlip Crumholt. Ms. Carol loved to travel and was employed as a Travel Agent, where she found great joy in helping her clients plan their vacations. She was a kind and loving lady, devoted to her children, grandchildren, and her five cats. She had an enormous personality and never met a stranger. Her hobbies included reading and listening to Beatles music. She was a member of Crosby Baptist Church.

Ms. Carol is preceded in death by her parents and her niece, Jennifer Crumholt.

She is survived by her children, Brandy Moore (Patrick) and James Nauman; brother, Tally Crumholt; sisters, Susan Hayes (Steve) and June Shaw; grandchildren, Jake Daniels (Sara), Megan Daniels, Olivia Harrington (Cody), Amber Daniels, Andrew Nauman (Jessica), Dylan Nauman, Brooklyn Hoyt, Kaylee Nauman, Logan Nauman, and Abigail Moore; and one great gran, Ava Harrington. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and other loving family members and friends.

Sylvia B. King

A graveside memorial service for Sylvia B. King will be held on Wednesday, March 26 at 3:30 p.m.

 Sylvia B. King was born on November 22, 1950, in Brandon MS to her mother Joyce Ruth Gray Boone Harmon and her father James Burl Boone. She departed from this life on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at Kings Daughters Hospital.

 Sylvia graduated from Pearl High School and continued to MS State University where she studied business and accounting and served as a student assistant under baseball Coach Ron Polk.

 Sylvia was married to Phillip King for 47 years.

 Sylvia was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church. She was the owner of Sylvia B. King Insurance Agency where helping her clients was the most rewarding part of her work. She received multiple sales and service awards throughout her career. Sylvia was a member of the First Ladies Civitan Club of Brookhaven where she volunteered many hours of service including serving as Club President. Her greatest passions were advocating for her family, friends and parents of special needs children. Sylvia enjoyed working with flowers, decorating her home and spending time with her friends. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

 She is survived by her spouse Phillip, her son Jason Phillip King, her sister Tammy "TJ" Harmon of Savannah, GA and her "make a block friends"

 She is preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Donnie Boone, Michael (John) Harmon and Jerry Harmon.

Johnny L. Beard

Johnny L. Beard, 71, of Hazlehurst, was born on August 28, 1953, to Jesse Beard and Catherine Howard Beard. Mr. Beard died on March 20, 2025, at St. Dominic’s Medical Center in Jackson, MS.

Mr. Beard owned his own business for 40 years. He lived in the river parishes of Louisiana for 30 years before settling back home to Mississippi. He loved restoring and owning old cars. He also enjoyed traveling, playing golf, fishing and crabbing. He served on the board of directors for River Parish Credit Union. Mr. Beard was a member of Smyrna Baptist church.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Francis McElveen.

He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Denise Beard; son, Shane Beard; brother, Jesse Beard; sister, Evelyn Delaughter; four grandchildren, Maddi Beard, Austin Burns, Jakob Lea, and Tucker Lea; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, and by his faith family at Smyrna Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers you may make memorial donations to the American Heart Association 7272 Greenville Ave, Dallas, TX 75231 or Smyrna Baptist Church.

A memorial service may follow at a later date.

Rachael Loraine Hamilton

Funeral service for Rachael Loraine Hamilton will be 11 a.m., Saturday, March 22, at Zion Hill Baptist Church in Wesson, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 10 a.m. until the time of service at Zion Hill.

Mrs. Hamilton, 83, of Wesson, passed away March 18, 2025. She was born in Wesson, MS, September 10, 1941, to Robert Lee Farrar and Emma Ontee Wilson Farrar. She was a loving and gracious wife, mother and grandmother. She was a faithful member of Zion Hill Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School as well as other ministries with her faith family. Mrs. Hamilton enjoyed painting, reading, gardening, and sewing. She was a student at Copiah Lincoln Community College from 1959-1961 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1961. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hamilton; her parents; brother, Butch Farrar; and sister, Emma Jane Dodds.

Surviving her are her children, Chuck Hamilton (Kenta), Tracey Bridges (Robbie), Katrina Castilaw (Mark), and Brad Hamilton (Kim); brother, Calvin Farrar; sisters, Nancy Alley and Patricia Parks; 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

The family expresses appreciation to Aspen Assisted Living of Brookhaven.

Visitation for Mrs. Maggie Leonard will be from 5-8 p.m., Wednesday, March 19, at Riverwood Family and will resume Thursday, March 20, from 9 a.m. until the time of service at Brookway Baptist Church.

A celebration of Jesus Christ will be held for Maggie Leonard 10 a.m., Thursday, March 20, at Brookway Baptist Church in Brookhaven, MS.

Mrs. Leonard was born in Nacogdoches, TX on July 22, 1925, and she lived here on earth 99 years. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She provided a gracious atmosphere for all her family and friends to enjoy, making sure they were never without food or the necessities of life. She was always striving to serve the will of God through her Savior, Jesus Christ. Mrs. Leonard entered her eternal reward March 16, 2025, from her home in Meadville, MS. She was a member of Temple Hill Church of Christ.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Leonard; her parents, James C. Nettles and May Pate Nettles; and her brother, James K. Nettles.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, C L Leonard; daughter, Nelda Leonard Perry; and her granddaughter, Alice Perry. She is also survived by a host of other loving family members, friends, and her faith family.

In lieu of flowers, find someone in need and or hungry; take care of their needs, cook home cooking, and assure they are cared for.

Wanda Ida Donley

Wanda Ida Donley, 74, of Ruth, MS, died on March 14, 2025, at her residence. She was born in Brookhaven on July 12, 1950, to Gus Boyte and Leila Thornton Boyte. She worked for many years with the Daily Leader. Mrs. Donley was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed having her family and friends around her. Some of her favorite pastimes were listening to music and looking for unique rocks and fossils. She also had a love for cats. Wanda will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Shawn Donley; her parents; sister, Andy Lewis; and brother, Bill Boyte.

She is survived by her children, Jimmy Bonson (Meredith), David Bonson (Lisa), and Chris Heathcock (Jennifer); sister, Sandy Leggett (John); and sister-in-law, Neomia Boyte; 11 grandchildren, Ian, Emily, Sarah, Caleb, Daniel, Karley, Cassie, Matt, Jason, and Matthew. She is also survived by a host of other loving family members and friends including Danyell Heathcock, Donnie Heathcock, Donnie Heathcock, Jr., and by numerous cousins.
