Barbara Jordan Smith

A graveside service will be held for Mrs. Barbara Jordan Smith, Monday, February 6, at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is 5-8 p.m., Saturday, February 4, at Riverwood Family.

Mrs. Smith, 78, of Brookhaven, died February 2, 2023, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, MS. She was born in Brookhaven, June 25, 1944, to Jewell J. Jordan and Geneva Watts Jordan.

Mrs. Smith was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She took great care in managing her home and she was also very much involved with her church family. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, where she was active in Ladies Bible Study and Tim Ratcliff Sunday School class. She was always happy to assist with meals at Friendship, for families or community and greatly enjoyed Friday night dinners with her sisters.

She was not just employed with Stribling, she had a very special place in her heart for her work family.  She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Dan P. Smith; parents; brother, Joe Jordan; and two nephews, Mark W. Moody and Jay C. Jordan.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Deanna Blackledge (Adair) and Dana Roberts (Dwayne); sisters, Elsie Smith and Betty Moody; four grandchildren, Taylor Brooke Roberts, Treston Roberts (Elizabeth), AnnAdair Blackledge, and Blount Blackledge; two great grandchildren, Paisley Roberts and Brileigh Roberts; a host of nieces and nephews, and other loving family members and friends.

We are most comforted by a special scripture during this journey, “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.  So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:17-18.

Our family would like to send sincerest love and appreciation to Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland and Deaconess Home Care in Brookhaven, for the comfort care given to our mom during one of the most difficult times in our lives.

Please consider a donation in her memory to Friendship Baptist Church 1502 Friendship Lane, Brookhaven, MS 39601 or Hospice Ministries, Inc. 450 Towne Center Blvd, Ridgeland, MS 39157.

I’m so sad of hear of Barbara’s passing. She and Dan Paul lived across from my parents when I was a teenager. I would run into her from time to time and always enjoyed visiting with her. To her girls and their families, I am so sorry for your loss.

I had the pleasure of working with Mrs. Barbara many years ago. She truly loved her family and spoke frequently about “her daughters!” Praying for all family and friends. I know she has that big smile shining bright.

Barbara I have known since childhood and she and Dan Paul were such dear friends to both my parents. She worked in the Tax Collector's office of Lincoln County when my mother, Laverne Lea was there and my dad, Coleman Lea was sheriff and tax collector of Lincoln County which was in 1968-1972. She was one of the sweetest, kindest ladies I have known as was Dan in being such a gentle hearted man. Until not too long ago I used to occasionally run into her around Brookhaven. She and her presence will be greatly missed by myself and others who have known her. May our God, the God of all comfort and mercy, comfort you and all who were acquainted with sweet Barbara in her passing. I, too, will miss her until we meet again.

    Elsie and Betty,
I want to extend my most sincere sympathy in the loss of Barbara. All of you were such an integral part of my early life. I so often think about you and your parents. To this day I still make “special sauce” whenever we have hot dogs. To my great surprise foot long hot dogs and buns appeared at the grocery last summer.
    Love you all,
