Jim Dyess

On Tuesday September 17th, Jim Dyess, loving father and faithful member of First Baptist Church Brookhaven,

passed away at the age of 71.  He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and community.

Jim was born on Oct 24th, 1947 in Greenwood, MS and spent his childhood in the Mississippi Delta.

He studied Industrial Engineering at Mississippi State and was inducted into Tau Beta Pi,

an honorary Engineering society, before graduating in 1969.  26 years later, he watched with pride

as both of his sons received the same honors at the same institution.

During his career, Jim traveled around the US as a gifted Biomedical Engineer.

He enjoyed forestry and was a part-time cattle farmer, a trade he learned from one of the greats, Baker Rogers.

In retirement, he kept his skills sharp and transitioned from fixing dialysis machines to fixing lawn-mowers

and almost anything else that you could come up with.  He was certainly not known for his business model,

though, as rebuilding and tuning your weed eater might only cost you the price of a blue plate lunch.

Jim had a huge heart for helping others and was humbled to receive the Brookhaven Exchange Club’s 2017 Golden Deeds award.

Jim is survived by his two sons, Matt and Mark Dyess, and a community grateful for his many years of friendship and service.

A celebration of his life will be held at the Riverwood Family Funeral Service facility on Tuesday September 24th from 2-4pm.

In lieu of flowers or donations, Jim would probably just encourage everyone to do a kind deed for a neighbor or even a complete stranger.

Oh this just breaks my heart! We rented a house from Mr. Jim and Mrs. Theresa for a few years. It was a blessing to know Mr. Jim! He was always so kind to all of us! Prayers are with the family!

Jim was a very special person to a bunch of friends at the KDMC fitness center. We all sat and drank coffee and joked and laughed. We enjoyed Jim very much. Being a close knit bunch, we always cherish the friends we meet. And Jim was truly a great friend with a big heart.. so sorry for your loss Matt and Mark. I know our crew will miss him terribly..

I met Jim through ILR last November and we became fast friends. He was kind enough to help me drive to my part time home in West Virginia in May. During the twelve hour drive, I discovered what a unique individual he was - so kind, humble, and caring. He was so proud of his sons and spoke of you often. The week before his surgery, we had started working a jigsaw puzzle. I was hoping we could finish it together, but it was not meant to be. I will truly miss his company, but feel very fortunate to have known him.

    My sincerest condolences,

    Carol Hodges

I worked with Him at Kidney Care for a number of years. We have had shared many experiences and conversations. Even after we both retired, we would see each other periodically in town and stop and reminense the good times and exchange pleasantries. I know his family is going to miss him. Condolences to all of his family.
