Steven “Steve” Carleton Wooten

Steven “Steve” Carleton Wooten, 75, of Star, MS, died August 11, 2020, peacefully at home surrounded by his family.

He was born in Brookhaven, MS, on February 14, 1945, a son of the late Claude and Lorena Wooten.

Steve was a content man who delighted in and appreciated the simple activities of life--farming,

playing trucks and cars, baseball, corncob jail, tag, and being with friends from church.

He enjoyed growing up with his three siblings in the New Prospect Baptist Church community of Brookhaven.

Steve graduated from Brookhaven High School in 1963. Following high school, he attended Copiah-Lincoln Community College

and Mississippi State where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. After college, Steve attended New Orleans Theological Seminary

and Mid-America Seminary. In 1976 the Lord extended to Steve a call to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Obediently until his death, Steve followed that calling.

Throughout his years in ministry, he served many churches which most recently included The Bible Baptist Church in Star. Steve enjoyed taking many

mission trips to the Philippines and had a love for the Filipino people.

While the highlight of Steve’s spiritual life was being called a son of God, marrying his best friend and the love of his life Sandra Gradene Smith on August 26, 1967,

was the highlight of his physical life. He explained their nearly 53 years of marriage as an act of God’s immeasurable grace! Throughout their marriage,

God blessed Steve and Gradene with nine wonderful children: three sons and six daughters. His work ethic was unrivaled, and with God’s leading,

Steve started his own business, Electro-Mech, Inc in Richland, MS. His life was indeed filled with miracle after miracle.

He is survived by his “bride” as he lovingly called her, Gradene Wooten, eight children, Jason and Kristie Wooten, Shannon and Dana Wooten,

Rachel and Scott Beasley, Leah and Buddy Pinkham, Josh and Haley Wooten, Joanna Hughes, Melissa and Jason McCoy, and Lydia and Justin Russell;

a sister-in-law, Helen Nunnery, a sister, Gwen Jeffries, a brother, Howard and Donna Wooten; also to include 30 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter to arrive in December,

nieces, and nephews, cousins, and countless friends. Other than his parents, Steve is preceded in death by his brother Gordon Wooten, brother-in-law Sonny Jeffries,

and an infant daughter, Elizabeth Wooten.

Public visitation will be from 9:00 until 11:00 on August 14, 2020, in the chapel of Riverwood Family Funeral Services located in Brookhaven, MS.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private celebration of life service followed by a graveside service will be officiated by Thomas Ray Floyd and Bill Smith.

Pallbearers will be Miles Corley, Larry Grace, Bryson Hughes, Buddy Pinkham, Levi Pinkham, Justin Russell, Brady Wooten, and Smith Wooten.

The family would like to express sincere thanks and gratitude to the amazing staff at the University of Mississippi Medical Center,

the supportive employees at The Transplant Pharmacy, and the encouraging staff at Baptist Hospice.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to either:

In trolling for memories of old friends, I was truly saddened to learn of the passing of an old friend from my MP&L days at Cleveland, MS. Steve worked as an Engineer supporting the power plants in the early 80s. I always felt like I was drinking from a fire hose while working at the plant, but when Steve came through the front gate, he brought with him a wonderful solace that was contagious to us all.
I can only express my deepest condolensces to his family and live with my own sorrow of having never reconnected with him. He was an outstanding Engineer and one of the finest people I've ever met. See you on the other side, Brother Steve.
    You buddy,
    Jake

I am heartbroken over the loss of my friend and brother in Christ. A friendship that lasted over 40 years. He gave up much to serve the Lord but he counted it gain. Serving God and ministering to others truly was his hearts desire. There are so many times that he was a confidant and councilor to me. Precious memories fill my soul. My deepest and heartfelt sympathy to Gradine and his Children.
    In Christ love,
    Ralph Estes

I am so sorry to hear about Bro. Steve's passing. I will be praying for the family during this sad journey they are going through. I remember he and his sweet family at Capital City Baptist Church many, many years ago. He and his sweet wife were always so kind and always were a joy to serve the Lord with. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To Sandra and all the family,
I didn't know Steve and Sandra well, having only spent 2 Sr.Adult Retreats with them at the Wilds Camp in NC. But I loved them both dearly, from the time I met them. They made such an impression on me and they are such godly people. Steve was truly a man of God. I was thinking about them the day before he died. I was hoping I would get to see them again at the Wilds. Guess I'll have to wait and see Steve in glory. Maybe I'll get to see Sandra before that time. All of you are in my prayers. God bless!

In a bible conference seven years ago in Tyler Texas, me and some others was sitting on the next to the last pew, after several songs I was taped on the should by an individual I didn’t know, sir, he said, would you mind covering up that ole bald head, that glare is about to blind me!!! Lol oh the laughter that ensued!!! That man was Steve Wooten!! The next time I heard from him was two weeks later when I was in the deer woods hunting, I get this call from a fella that wants to know if I’m a sovereign Grace Baptist. After insuring him I was he tells me he’s with the Jehovah witnesses , and that if I’ll give him 15 minutes, he’ll convert me!! Lol yes it was brother Steve! That’s how our great friendship began!! As my friend, he was loyal !!!! As gods servant, he was not only loyal, but consistent!!!!! In all my life I’ve never been more encouraged to do right by Jesus and to be steadfast than by my Brother Steve. He called one day and when asked how I was , I broke down, I was going through the roughest time in my life with one of my children, brother Steve also started crying and said brother Neil I don’t know what’s wrong , but it breakers my heart that your hurting like you are. He called faithfully daily for months to comfort and encourage me!! Our time was short, I can’t say what kind of husband, father employer or anything else he was only the kind of friend he was to me!! I loved brother Steve as I have only two other men, my father and my old pastor!! Until we sing together in glory my friend ??
