Mrs. Keith Covington Newland McDaniel

A Memorial gathering for Mrs. Keith Covington Newland McDaniel will be 11 a.m. Monday, November 7, at Faith Presbyterian Church in Brookhaven.

Keith Covington Newland McDaniel went to her heavenly reward on November 3, 2022, at the age of 97 years.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her children, Kent McDaniel (JoAnn), Carol Taylor (Bill), and Kirk McDaniel (Mary Jane), as well as six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She was born June 22, 1925, to Doctor Leroy T. Newland and Sarah Louise Andrews Newland, and raised mostly on the mission field in Korea prior to coming to college at Belhaven University in Jackson. She had three older brothers, and three older sisters, all of whom predeceased her. Keith lost her precious husband, James “Jim” McDaniel, in December 1986, and she lived a very full life of service to others, both before and after his passing.

Keith was a Master’s level teacher, mostly of languages, at both the high school and community college prior to her retirement at Copiah Lincoln Community College in 1984. Following her retirement, Keith got even more heavily involved in work for Christ’s Kingdom. From her home in Brookhaven, MS, she served in multiple missions, many out of the country, to places like Mexico City (she taught Spanish and was fluent in it), Juarez, Belize, Peru, Ukraine, and Korea. Closer to home she was involved in Missions Mississippi, Prison Fellowship, King’s Daughters Hospital Auxiliary, nursing home visitation, and Brother Durr’s food pantry and outreach, to name a few. She remained a “teacher” in many settings including Sunday School at Faith Presbyterian in Brookhaven and traveling to speak at Christian Women’s Clubs around the southeastern United States. She loved to bake homemade bread and share it with many friends and strangers, (although no one stayed in this category for long once they met Keith).

The family wishes to thank her special caregivers, Sherice Walker, Gladys Cooper, Earnestine Hudson, Edwina (EJ) Bronson and Mitzi Proctor.

Our families in South Korea and America are so blessed by knowing Keith and the parent who did an amazing ministry in Corea(now Korea) about 110 years ago. We became a huge beneficiary through their mission and more than 200 people in our families are saved and got to know God in the bible. My mom who is 92 years old, still alive, used to grew up with Keith in Corea when Mr. & Mrs. Newland do the ministry there. I had a chance to visit Keith in 2017 and was able to say 'thank you' for the beautiful ministry Mr. & Mrs. Newland and seven children did. Since then, Keith became our great prayer partner for Turkey and Islamic region which I am working for as a missionary. She gave me a call very often to ask my prayer request for the ministry. I still remember her voice and passion. I was afraid to call her during COVID time. You know why. I found out she is with the Lord and her parent and siblings couple of weeks ago by searching her name in internet.
We want to show our great condolences to Kent, Carol and Kirk from the bottom of my heart. Love

I am so very sorry to hear of the loss to your family. I know how you all loved and cared for your Mom and grandmother vigilantly. I also know that all the angels of Heaven burst into song when Keith ultimately returned to the Father. For her, "going home" was the day she had worked toward all her life, and I am sure the most glorious day of her life.

She was a close friend of my Mother's, Dorris Nolan, and they worked together for years in various capacities at Faith Presbyterian, most recently as co-teachers of the Ruby Newman Sunday School Class, a group of highly accomplished women who had been sincerely studying and worshipping together for decades. I loved joining in the class when I was in Brookhaven with Mom, and particularly when Keith was teaching. She knew the Bible backwards and forwards, and loved it devoutly. She was a teacher at heart.

I remember once when Mother was not able to take me to the Jackson airport for a return flight to DC, and, of course, Keith was right there to offer help. I will never forget in the car we were talking about her life with her husband, and her service to the Lord. I shared that often when I was praying I would be distracted with thoughts wondering off to other things. Keith said, and I quote, "Happens to all of us. I call it swating flies in the throne room!".

What a wonderful example, friend, and force for the Lord she was.
I will be so happy to see her again someday. In the meantime, my thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

    Tonie

PS We enjoyed more than our share of her delicious, home-baked bread!

I am so sorry to hear about Mrs Mac’s passing. She and your dad were great friends to our family and I will always cherish the memories that we had when I was younger coming to her home and was always met with other a smile. Later as I got older for college I really enjoyed taking her Spanish class. I still cannot roll my r’s but that is ok. Love you all and I do know that she was a beautiful soul and was greeted by all those that loved her in heaven. I am so sorry that I am just now seeing this as well. My prayers and thoughts are with you always.

Mrs. McDaniel was my first college professor at Co-Lin in 1979. I will never forget her and her kind ways. She taught me so much and I often quote her. She always said, "Profanity is a crutch for crippled conversation." She was a wonderful teacher and a wonderful person.

Kent, Carol and Kirk, Your Mom was one of the sweetest and kindest ladies I have ever known. The expression on her face, without her saying a word, always glowed showing her love for Jesus. Her prayers were beautiful. One of my blessings was to know her. My prayers are with each one of you.

Lovely lady. I had several interactions with her over the years at KDMC where she volunteered; most recently,15 years ago when she visited with me and my sister in the ER when we were afraid my sister was having a blood clot after having bilateral knee replacement. She was a precious lady who blessed your family and many others. I know she is getting her heavenly reward now.

Highlights of my years at Co-Lin included having “Miss Mc” for English Comp and “Sir Durr” for British Literature! She was the epitome of Matthew 5:16, or as she taught us a “shining light” personified! Miss McDaniel was among the most godly women I’ve ever known. I’m thankful our paths crossed.

What a special lady! I have never forgotten the weekly gatherings of us neighborhood children when The McDaniels lived on Ann Street. Mrs. McDaniel would read us a story from the Bible and serve Kool Aid and cookies. At Christmas, it was caroling around the neighborhood and hot chocolate. Her kindness and Christian example meant a lot to me. I’m sorry for the family’s loss at this time.

Mrs. McDaniel was a sweet blessing to two of my sisters while they were in Haven Hall Health Care Center at Brookhaven. Both of my sisters (now deceased) enjoyed and appreciated her visits and prayers. I’m sure my sisters today are quite happy to be reunited with Mrs. Keith. She was a rich blessing.
God’s loving comfort be with each of you.

My prayers are with the family during this difficult time. I loved Mrs. Mack! She was one of my favorite teachers from Co-Lin. I saw her occasionally after graduation and her retirement. And I’ve thought about her many times over the years. She was special and will be greatly missed! I know she heard “Well done good and faithful servant” from her Master.
