Sarah Nell Underwood (Gill)

Sarah Nell Underwood (Gill) passed away on November 7, 2022, as a result of lung cancer. She died peacefully, with her loving family at her side. She was born on February 17, 1960, in Memphis TN, and grew up in Frenchman’s Bayou AR. Sarah was raised in a hard-working delta family. As a child, she chopped cotton, worked the garden, and tended the farm animals. She graduated from Rivercrest High School in 1978. She then attended her beloved University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS, and graduated with a degree in business administration in 1982 She was a member of the Ole Miss Choir and one of the original members of the Ole Miss Concert Singers. She married Don Underwood in 1984 and they moved to his hometown of Brookhaven MS. Sarah quickly became involved in the community. She was best known for her beautiful soprano voice. She led the soprano section of the First United Methodist Church for almost 40 years and shared her beautiful voice at innumerable weddings, funerals, and other social functions. Sarah shined when she sang. She was an active member of the Brookhaven Little Theatre, both starring in and directing many shows, as well as serving on their board of directors. Sarah was also the recipient of the prestigious BLT John Landress Award. Sarah worked for the Mississippi Division of Medicaid for more than 30 years. Through the years, she humbly helped the most vulnerable in our community. She retired from her regional manager position in June of 2022. Sarah loved all her family and friends, and she loved her community, but none owned her heart, like her only child, her dear son Stone Underwood. Never has there been a more faithful mother. She was often seen sporting a Stone tote bag at football games, wearing a Stone football jersey, and she put up a Stone Christmas tree yearly, decorated with all his childhood ornaments. May all mothers endeavor to love like Sarah loved Stone. Sarah is survived by her husband, Don Underwood, son, Stone Underwood, daughter-in-law, Devon Kelly Underwood, sister, Polly Gill, sister, Trudy Gill, brother, Gus Daniel (Danny) Gill, and sister-in-law, Tammy Underwood Torrey. She is proceeded in death by her parents, Charlene Laverne Cothern Gill and Gus Daniel Gill, grandparents, George Gus GIll and Florence Stone Gill, and her brother-in-law, Jimmy Torrey.

Visitation is Wednesday, November 9th, from 5:00-8:00 pm at Riverwood Family Funeral Service, Brookhaven, MS, and Thursday, November 10th, 9:30-10:30 am, at First United Methodist Church, Brookhaven, MS, followed by the funeral service at 10:30 am. Burial will follow at Riverwood Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Sarah G. Underwood Athletic Fund at Copiah-Lincoln Community College or to Brookhaven Animal Rescue League (BARL)

I knew of Sarah but didn’t have the privilege of meeting her until after I was diagnosed with cancer. She called me one day and wanted to know if she could stop by and just talk! She brought a huge satchel filled with devotion books, treats, search a words, magazines, puzzles and the list goes on. We made an instant connection and talked for hours. I felt as though I had known her my whole life. After that day, she would call periodically and say she was heading my way with a Blizzard and we would sit on the porch and talk. Sarah was a Godsend to me. She lifted me up numerous times and was always so happy and smiling from ear to ear. I can still see her “speed walking” in the neighborhood waving and always speaking. Sarah touched my heart and I am so thankful she called me that day. Stone, just know you were in every conversation. She lit up at the mention of your name. I am so grateful that I can say I knew her and loved her. What an awesome, precious soul! I love you, Sarah! Don and Stone, I will continue to pray for you both!

Jerry and I met Sarah and Don through the Walk to Emmaus back in the early 1990's. She was on my walk and Don was on Jerry's walk. We loved both of them immediately. I served on many walks with Sarah through the years and was always inspired by her vibrance, hard working attitude and of course, her beautiful voice gifted to her from the Lord. We will keep Don and Stone and all those who loved Sarah in our prayers for peace and comfort from our loving Lord.

To Don, Stone, Devon and the rest of the family, please know that Sarah is loved and highly respected by many. I worked with Sarah at the Division of Medicaid from July 1989 - my retirement in June 2009. Though she had fun on the job, she was a very hard worker and the best cook and meal planner that I’ve ever met. She was friends to many and never met a stranger. She touched the lives of many and knew someone everyplace we went. I will miss Sarah and she’s one I’ll never forget. Blessings and much comfort to the family.

    To the Underwood family,

I had the honor of knowing Sarah at Ole Miss while in graduate school and shared her love of singing in Concert Singers. Sarah was always a bright light and a quick wit, full of joy and laughter. She was the life of the party and so much fun to be around. I also followed her work with BLT through mutual friends. Sadly, I also battled cancer, and lost the ability to sing as I once did. I look forward to the day when my voice is restored in heaven, and we can sing together again with Sarah and the other angels to give glory to God. May God's grace, mercy and peace be with you and your family.

Don, Stone & Kelly, We are so very sorry for your loss. Words can not express the loss of a wife and Mother. May God be extra close to y'all these next few days. I will never forget the first time I met her at the ‘Underwood Reunion’. I had pasted out some of my church fans from what I had with my name of the back of them where I worked at the Funeral Home. She was asking who or where was Sherry Wilburn? She was related to the Wilburns in MS. Come to find out, my husband, Russell and she were kind of related first cousins and had played together as children at his Aunt Tootse’s home! Really can be a small world. Russel and I extend our warmed and heartfelt prayers for all of her family. (I don't know if you have heard that Russell had a stroke in September and I still am not able to bring him home yet!) ?♥️?

I am so sorry for your loss. She was a wonderful performer. I remember her most fondly as Nancy when we did "Oliver!" at BLT when I was a kid. After I moved, I became an actress and did lots of character work and my inspirations were, often times, Ms. Sarah. I'm so grateful for her warm heart and wonderful talent.

Her love for people was always evident in all she did. She helped countless numbers of people in her job, cheered on those who were down and out and needed encouragement and kindness. She was beautiful in both body, soul, talent, and spirit. Rest In Peace , Sarah Underwood .

Our hearts break for you. We had the honor of knowing Sarah through our son Kyle, who played football with Stone at WVU. She was a proud mother and a buoyant spirit. She raised a wonderful young man. May God put his healing arms around you all.
